Hi,
      1) I changed the entry of /etc/passwd for root, just wrote "abcd"
inspite of "root" didn't change any other field of super-User in the passwd
file.
        2) did a "pwconv"
        3) Edited group file to replace root by abcd
        4) Tried telnet 0 and ftp 0 with this new user "abcd"
        5) Rebooted the m/c

Now it is coming up ....but lot of errors come like
no passwd entry for root or root login bad...
        init:/usr/sbin/rmount fails
        Xwindows does not start
I don/t get any login prompt.
It should have then mapped uid with the new name "abcd" and not
root...

Then what is the correct method of changing the name of root accnt?
        What do i do now?

Nasarullah.

Files on the disk don't have usernames associated with them. The owner
of a file is stored as a numeric UID inside the inode. (Same for the
group.)

When you do an "ls -l", the ls command gets the UID of the owner of the
file from the inode, then looks that number up to convert it into a name
for human readability. If you have two or more accounts in the passwd
file that both have the same numeric UID, ls will print whichever name
appears first.

This is where you need to be careful. Examine this script -- it's
probably doing something like:

  if [ `whoami` != root ]; then ...; fi

I don't know how this will act in the presence of multiple uid=0 accounts.
(And of course, your script may look different.)

Be prepared to edit these scripts as necessary.
