Thanks everyone for your help!  I have all the info I could possibly
need.  My concern for my co-worker was that he might not have OS disks,
so the only reason I wanted to try and get on without wiping everything
out was to try and preserve Win2K so they could actually use the laptop.
I was assured this morning that he actually does have original disks and
all the additional software he needs, so I will wipe it clean and start
over.

I thought there was a chance the previous, disgruntled owner might have
left a bomb of some kind, so I was did plan to wipe everything else off
the hard drive anyway for security reasons.  (And yes, win2k might have
been harboring unseen bugs...) 

Turns out the laptop doesn't have a CD-Rom drive, but that is a totally
different problem and the new owner will have to go get one or go to the
manufacturer about it before I can do anything to help.

Again, thanks.  I'm learning a lot from this list that is really
helpful.
