The first half of the book is boring; there is nothing new compared to what one can learn in school, and one can imagine by himself. But I agree that the second part, which explains clearly how and why we are using today's cryptography systems, is quite interesting.
Hopefully the book is so small and easy to read. Its a great book, but I must clarify that it is a book on the history of cryptography and its evolution from ancient times to the current state. It is not a book on protocols and algorithms. It does do a great job of making the history interesting and you never really get bored. I had also better qualify my statement by saying that I havent read any other book on the history of cryptography, so I cant really compare with other similar books.
