I ran into the same issue when installing PGPNet/PGPVpn and found a way to
sort it out without reinstalling anything. If this ever happens to anybody
on this list, simply reboot in safe mode and answer "no" to the first
question XP asks you when you have rebooted in safe mode. Instead of
bringing you the safe mode desktop, XP will go in Restore mode and will
present you a calendar of the system restore points that he has made. Simply
select a date before you did the installation and ask him to restore. The
operation should take between 5 and 10 minutes and after that you will have
to reboot and will be fine. Don't worry if you didn't make manual restore
points, since XP is doing automatic system restore point for you.

The PGP 7.1 from NAI (if you can still find a place to buy it) works great.
Just DON'T use PGPnet/PGPvpn with the XP network stack. For whatever reason
Microsoft decided that the TCP/IP stack could never get corrupted or screwed
up. As such if it does get messed up due to some network program you have
to reinstall XP from scratch.

However if you use PGPmail it works fine. If you get an error of "Can't
Contact the PGPsdk service" its due to the fact that XP optimizes the
program/services load order to make it appear to load faster to an end user.
Just wait a minute and then run the PGPtray program again and it should be
able to contact the PGPsdk at that point.

I haven't tried it with XP, but ActivePerl runs fine on Win2000.
