The DMZ is where you should place all your services. Not only is it protected from the 
public network (Internet), it is also protected from the private network (LAN); or 
more appropriately, your LAN is protected from the DMZ. If your mailserver is 
compromised then there is less chance of the attacker being able to access the rest of 
the network.
