Not so odd.  Everyone has to start somewhere.  I was at what 
sounds like his stage less than a year ago.  I knew next to 
nothing about security or networking, especially in windoze, 
and I got stuck with admining a poor-man's P2P network for 
my advisor.  

I jumped in head first.  I just started with more CS/ITsec
friends than he sounds like he did.  They helped me get 
quick-started.  Never underestimate the value of a network 
admin as a neighbor.  ;-)  Kudos to those of you who do this 
professionally.  I'd probably tear my hair out.
