If this is just a tape and its not going to be used again (recommended) then just get a large magnet to it and smash it up, rip the tape, submerge it in water... kill it :)
I dont tend to keep my tapes when they need to be securely erased. For reliability I try not to use a tape more than a couple of times, I just keep that tape in storage for a while. They are so cheap to buy now though. Hope this helps. However, since you are emailing from Australia, I doubt HIPPA applies to you. I would check with your government for specific rules (if any). You could try overwritting the whole tape serveral times over. Fill the tape up with the same small file over and over again. Then use a powerful magnet.
