It was failing due to SecureRandom problems on some platforms when run in samevm
mode. I think it was related to a lack of entropy.

Really?  That surprises me!  Generally it's when you run in othervm that 
you you might run out of entropy in /dev/random.

Can you reliably duplicate this?
