Passwd Utility

Hello, I am trying change my password in opensolaris by using the passwd 
command from a terminal session.  Upon running the utility, I am asked for my 
current password.  After entering the password, to which I know to be correct, 
I am given a permission denied error message.  Why am I am receiving this 
message when I am entering the correct password?
