Also playing along Alan's ideas. Coming from a Linux veteran, yes,
Linux is not for the meak. And I started using it when it was MUCH
harder to use. It's alot simpler now.
My suggestion if you want to start getting your feet wet with Linux is
to get Corel's Distribution. It's extremely simplified and does alot of
the work for you. It also uses the KDE GUI which is very similar to
Windows, and a good Sampling of programs. It also can be set up on your
Windows partition, so you don't have to fiddle with partitions.
If after that you want to play with more of a "Linuxy" distrobution.
Red Hat is still concidered the standard. 6.2 is fresh out, with the
latest kernel version, and the Gnome GUI that is starting to be
associated very strong with "the look of Linux." However, it does take
a greater knowledge to work with. Also, you will have to partition, so
depending on how you feel about (PowerQuest Partition Magic recommended
for the least discomfort in the process) you may not like that first off
in your exploration of the OS.
As far as links to follow, I agree with what's already been posted.
Something else I'd research is the book Red Hat Linux 6.0 Unleashed.
The distrobution inside of it is a little old, but It's still the same
basic information, and it's a wonderful way to start warming up to the
OS, especially if you get the RH version (kinda a given :-)
Somethimg I would like to add though. Alot of people waht to download
Linux, but it is a monstrosoty of a file, no matter where you get it
from. So...might I suggest www.cheapbytes.com. They download the
distrobutions and put them on disks for you. End cost to you is cost of
the disk + S&H. A nice way to go and saves you alot of trouble.
