If you are near a fairly decent library, there are two series of books to
look for - one is by forrest crossen (Western Yesterdays) and it is a
series of interviews with folks from the intermountain west (these
interviews were with folks who had lived in the 1860s - 1890's). Another
one is the series put out annually by the Denver Westerners (Brand Book) -
they also have articles about a wide variety of Intermountain west topics.

In terms of maps, if you look up custer on the internet, I'm sure you will
find maps depicting the forts (from South Dakota to Idaho) in that area,
also look up the story on Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce - which should
also show the forts in eastern washington, Idaho and Montana.
