I have no doubt that your tea method is just a variation of the classic 
"spit shine" method.  See the following page for an explanation of this 
method, albeit no spit is used - you use water or your case you could 
use tea.  I would thin the tea, though, as it tends to be acidic. I 
think the whole object here is to thin the wax paste with some liquid 
and probably any liquid would do, so long as it does not damage the 
leather.
