I note that you already have received some suggestions from other
members, but could I get some clarification here. Are you looking for
an indicator of a hard drive crash or rather of a system crash, freeze,
etc.?
Check out the following software called "Inteli-SMART". It will check
your drive for potential problems. Not sure about the tray aspect you
request. Is that even warm for what you seek?

Else...I am thinking what you really seek are crash protectors. Most
are commercial and I personally have never found them to be of any
great value. But if that is what you want to look into, let us know
and we will point you to some of them.
Of all the suggestions you got, I personally liked the leads that
Robert and Dennis were giving you, to use a freeware app to monitor the
CPU and memory uses. TClock, which btw...is a favorite freeware of
mine, can do this; so can resident windoze apps such as "system
monitor" and "resource meter." And both those should be in your
Windows 95, Brian. We've had those since Windows 3, I thought.
Alan (...who sez keep an eye on resource usage and you'll head off most
crashes...)
