Not all search engines permit the use of those special characters.
You'll need to check the "Help" file for each to find out.
AltaVista is one that uses them. This page will explain their functions
at AV, and they generally have the same functions at other sites that
use them.
Check the links at the bottom of the page for other useful info about
searching at AV--including "Advanced Search", which lets you search with
even more specificity.
