GeoCanada 2000
THE MILLENNIUM GEOSCIENCE SUMMIT

http://www.geocanada2000.com/

Abstract submittal commences Oct-1 until Jan-7

GeoCanada 2000 will bring together all the geosciences for the summit
conference of the millennium. It will be an unprecedented opportunity
to integrate our collective knowledge and ideas and explore new ways
of working together. We'll look back to what we've already accomplished
in the geosciences in Canada and contemplate the fresh opportunities
afforded by the new millennium. GeoCanada 2000 - the view from the summit,
together Participating societies are the Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU),
the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG), the Canadian
Society of
Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), the Canadian Well Logging Society (CWLS),
the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) and the Mineralogical
Association of Canada (MAC).

Summit Program -
including entertaining and provocative Keynote Speakers
and Summit Sessions on science and technology of broad interest, and on
non-technical issues impacting our professions such as politics, business,
environment and demographics.

Technical Program -
anchored by the Thematic Sessions, most of which are co-sponsored by two or
more societies to ensure broad disciplinary and sectoral coverage. The
General Poster Sessions are designed to encourage discussions on
disciplinary advances with allocated time for introductions by contributors,
and the novel Commercial - Technical Sessions that honour important
contributions
by the instrument and software developers and consultants who drive technology
and exploration analysis.

Interactive Program -
including Rock, Core and Curatorial Displays from great discoveries and
museums across Canada, the Field Trips where you will visit some of the
finest geology in North America, and the Short Courses on current topics for
which textbooks do not yet exist. The Interactive Program will be linked to
the Thematic Sessions so that delegates will gain comprehensive perspectives
in congenial activities and settings.

The following four themes are featured at the Summit:

Discovery -
Great petroleum and mining discoveries, crystal to continental structures.
Intended for those engaged in the exploration and development of hydrocarbon
and
mineral resources, and characterization of Canada's landmass.

Time -
At scales ranging from human to geologic, including high precision
chronometry,

Economic Geology Sessions

Session #32: Intrusion-Related Gold Deposits of the Circum-Pacific
Sponsoring Societies: GAC

Convenors: Jim Mortensen (University of British Columbia), Jeremy Richards
(University of Alberta)

Intrusion-related gold deposits have been a major exploration target in the
circum-Pacific for many years. Regional and deposit-specific studies over the
past decade have led to the recognition of both the great variability between
deposits of this class as well as certain features that most deposits have in
common. This thematic session will bring together researchers studying
intrusion-related gold deposits at all scales, from individual deposits to
global overviews, as well as selected presentations focusing on structural,
lithogeochemical, and fluid chemistry controls on mineralization. The aim of
the session is to highlight global similarities between deposits of this
type, as well as specific factors that affect the exact nature of
mineralization at a deposit scale. We hope the session will provide a
synthesis of our current understanding of intrusion-related gold deposits and
identify possible new exploration strategies to aid in the search for new
deposits.

Session #33: Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide Deposits of Latin America
Sponsoring Societies: GAC

Convenors: Ross Sherlock (SRK Consulting), Roland Bartsch (SRK Consulting)

The Mineral Deposit Division of the Geological Association of Canada is
producing a volume on Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide (VMS) Deposits of Latin
America. The volume will include papers that address specific deposits as
well as regional metallogenic studies of VMS districts. The volume will be
published in time for the session, in both English and Spanish versions. We
currently have 40 committed papers covering 13 countries. During the meeting,
the authors are invited to present their work during a special symposium
where papers will cover all aspects of VMS exploration and current research
in Latin America.

Session #34: Diamond-Host Rocks: New Exploration Targets and Scientific
Insights --Sponsoring Societies: MAC / GAC

Convenors: Daniel Schulze (U of Toronto), Desmond Moser (U of Utah), Michael
Marchand (Madrona Mining Ltd., Calgary)

Within the past decade, a great deal of new information has emerged about
kimberlites, diamonds, and mantle petrology, spurred on by exciting new
Canadian diamond discoveries in the Slave Province. These discoveries have
prompted a worldwide diamond exploration rush, which has resulted in many new
insights into diamond genesis, emplacement, and exploration models. New
technological advances have provided greater precision in isotope and trace
element studies providing new data for interpretation, and new diamond
discoveries have prompted new kimberlite emplacement models. This session
will focus on discovery: data, interpretations, syntheses, exploration models
and methodologies, occurrences, and insights. New insights into the mantle
source region of diamonds as well as new tectonic interpretations are
welcome. Submissions are encouraged from both industry and academic
perspectives
