Ken and Colleagues:
There are number of options
The obvious one is the KT-9 that at one time was available from
Terraplus. The beauty of this system is that it had the facility to
connect to a computer for downloading data.
However I recommend some major caution here.
What level of variation are you looking for? Are you trying to
distinguish between a highly magnetic material and a relatively
non-magnetic material? If so good.
Are you trying to establish approximate susceptibility levels for inputs
into a geomagnetic model? Again OK.
BUT
If you want an absolute susceptibility value that you can trust then a
handheld system will NOT give you that level of accuracy.
If you want to differentiate between phases of a layered intrusive
complex then I would strongly recommend that you do NOT use a handheld
system.
In this case I think there are two options.
The Bartington MS-2 system gives you values in either cgs, or SI units
the system is calibrated. Further they provide a coil for core logging
that is calibrated for a specific core size. Correction for a smaller
size of core is simple.
The other option is Sapphire Instruments from Southern Ontario. Again
they provide a system that connects directly to a laptop and gives values
in cgs and SI units.
