All:

Building on the excellent news Bo Lo brought us yesterday about the
University of Toronto's having received the SEG's Distinguished Achievement
award, I am very pleased to add as well, that the SEG is also honoring two
people who have personally made very significant contributions to the field
of mining geophysics:

Stan Ward: Maurice Ewing Award
Peter Annan: Honorary Membership

The Ewing award is the SEG's highest personal honor and Stan joins three
other distinguished 'mining types' in having received this award;

1981 J. Tuzo Wilson
1987 Arthur A. Brant
1995 Harold O. Seigel

Given that the University of Toronto was the academic well spring of all
four recipients, this fact alone would warrant the UofT Physics Department
receiving the Distinguished Achievement Award!

The SEG has this to say about the Ewing award:

The Maurice Ewing Medal shall be awarded from time to time to a person who,
in the unanimous opinion of the Honors and Awards Committee and of the
Executive Committee, is deserving of special recognition through having made
major contributions to the advancement of the science and profession of
exploration geophysics. The award of the Maurice Ewing Award shall confer
Honorary Membership on its recipients.

Not to be overshadowed by Stan's award, Peter Annan's citation marks a
significant milestone in a professional career still building its stride. We
fully expect Peter to harvest more awards as time goes on!

The SEG indicates the following about their Honorary Membership award:

Honorary Membership shall be conferred upon persons who, in the unanimous
opinion of the Honors and Awards Committee and the Executive Committee, have
made distinguished contributions, which warrants exceptional recognition, to
exploration geophysics or a related field or to the advancement of the
profession of exploration geophysics through service to the Society.

Both Stan and Peter will be at Calgary. The formal award ceremony will be
Monday AM at the President's Session, so please attend if you can. The
Mining and Geothermal Committee will also be taking the opportunity to "tip
the hat" when the occasion allows. I as well, encourage you all when you see
Stan or Peter, to personally express your own acknowledgement of their
prestigious accomplishments.

And finally, I'd ask you to pause for a moment and remember that our future
Stan Ward's or Peter Annan's need our help now. The KEGS Foundation was set
up last year to do just that by providing scholarships to worthy students in
geophysics across Canada. A donation to the Foundation would be a very
appropriate means to help perpetuate the excellence in our profession that
is embodied in Stan and Peter's awards of the present. Information about the
Foundation can be obtained from Jerry Roth at (416) 449-2226 or at
