Dear Colleague:

Calgary is less than two weeks away!

The SEG's web site www.seg.org has had for some time a full list of all the
technical events; talks, short courses and workshops that will be offered.
As well all needed ancillary information about hotels, lunches and spouse
programs is available to review and act upon as need be. What I wanted to do
with this final message is highlight some of the special or last minute
events that happen during the week on a day by day basis.

Prof Ken Duckworth, has kindly offered to arrange visits to the University
of Calgary Geophysics Lab for any interested visitors. Those wanting more
information can either get a preview of the lab at:
http://www.geo.ucalgary.ca/~duckwrth/kd.html or contact Professor Duckworth
directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or by phone at 403 220 7375.

Monday August 7th:

-SEG Awards: As flagged earlier, there will be three awards given at the
Monday AM Presidential Session that honor significant contributions made to
the mining industry; to Dr Stan Ward; the Maurice Ewing Award (the SEG's
highest honor), to Dr. Peter Annan; Honorary Membership, and the University
of Toronto Geophysics Group of the Physics Department; the Distinguished
Achievement Award. Be there if you can!

-SEG Mining and Geothermal General Meeting: Time: 5:30pm - 8:00pm Venue:
Stampede Park; Room: Rotary House
Get to hear what the Committee has been up to while you have some free food
and beer! As Special Feature in conjunction with IAGSA, Malcolm Imray (SGL)
will wrap up the session with a talk entitled: "Aviation Safety issues in
Airborne Geophysics - Twin engine versus single engine"

Wednesday August 9th:

Pasminco; Talk entitled :"Budgets, Success, Innovation & Cooperation - A
Lunchtime Perspective on Mining Exploration"

-JANUS Session: 1:30PM-5PM; A Special Session for the Turing of the
Millennium: "Where from and Where to for Mining Geophysics?" Chaired by Mr
Joe Inman; Kennecott. The session will be comprised of two parts; to start a
series of distinguished speakers will set the stage, followed by a panel
discussion

Review and Predictions for the Future
Brian Spies Future Technology
Seigel, Corrans, Gingerich & Kostlin Explore or Acquire? The Dilemma,
(presenter: Eddie Kostlin)

-Special Last Minute Feature!!
Dr Mark Dransfield, BHP Minerals will give us an update on BHP's new
airborne gravity gradiometer system. This will be immediately following the
finish of the JANUS session (same venue @ 5PM)

-Mining Workshop; Chaired by Dick West (BHP) "Ore Deposits Seminar" Dick has
summarized this wrap-up highlight of Calgary as follows:

"...at this workshop, 10 of your peers from various mineral exploration and
exploration contract/consulting companies will present investigations of the
discovery of Porphyry Copper and Unconformity Uranium deposits with an
emphasis on the development of exploration models based on physical property
measurements of the ore and host. Discussions on the effectiveness of the
geophysical models in the discovery process and how the models were modified
as the exploration process matured. The learnings gained from the
evaluation will aid exploration efforts in other deposits styles. Jeremy
Richards, a professor of economic geology at the University of Alberta and
Mary Doherty a leading mineral geochemist will be part of the
panel discussions and will help keep the focus on geologic reality and a
multi-disciplinary approach.

I believe this workshop will provide explorers in the mineral industry with
a good sampling of current exploration models for Porphyry Copper and
Unconformity Uranium ore deposits and will also expand the understanding and
the importance of the role of physical property measurements in the
exploration process."

Contact Dick @ [EMAIL PROTECTED] for any further information.

Hope to see you there!

Regards

Ken Witherly
