Dear Colleagues:
At the PDAC earlier this month, Duncan Crone received a Distinguished
Service Award for his life time contributions to the exploration industry.
This citation is reproduced below.
I personally spent a lot of time with Duncan's gear and the time domain
borehole stuff was my favorite, actually found some tonnes of nickel ore
with it south of Timmins in the late 1970s! The Shoot-Back EM system while
very innovative, did have some unexpected problems for us as my employer
expanded overseas. One geo told me that when we were in the process of doing
an importation into a South American country, local officials felt the name
"Shoot Back" was of concern and we needed to explain that this was not some
sort of gringo ploy to import hostiles into their country! Also used
Duncan's VLF (Radem I think it was called); while it looked the classic
'black box', the EM-16 was my favorite in the VLF department (can't win 'em
all Duncan). One aspect of Duncan's very pragmatic approach which did not
get captured below was his prolific production of very readable case
studies, wish more people had his particular literary bend! Many thanks
Duncan!
Best Regards
Ken Witherly
(P.S. Thanks to Bill Ravenhurst of Crone Geophysics for tracking down the
PDAC citation)

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD - DUNCAN CRONE
Duncan Crone is the first of our two Distinguished Service Awards recipients
this evening. This award recognizes and pays tribute to Mr. Crones lifelong
career in geophysics and for his many important contributions to the
advancement of the science.
Mr. Crones career has been one of innovation and invention, research and
development, curiosity and drive. His remarkable ability to understand a
physical property or phenomenon and to translate it into a practical, usable
and commercial application has benefited the mineral exploration industry
worldwide.
Mr. Crone's early career took him to Newmont in Jerome, Arizona. Here he
worked with an exceptional group of geophysicists who successfully applied
Induced Polarization to exploration. Mr. Crone then went on to develop an IP
receiver which was reliable and simple to operate.
Later, when he was involved with magnetic, gravity, and vertical loop EM
surveys for the company, Radar Exploration, he successfully applied gravity
surveys to differentiate graphite from massive sulphides in the Bathurst
Camp.
He then began to work on practical and portable EM systems that could be
used to locate near-surface massive sulphides. These were further developed
when he set up his own business in 1962.
His crowning achievements were borehole and surface time-domain EM
equipment, which he named Pulse EM. Pulse EM allows the geophysicist to look
deeper into the earth and has become an integral part of modern exploration
programs.
The PDAC thanks and congratulates Mr. Crone for his remarkable
contributions to our industry. I call on Mark Smith to present this award.
