Dear Colleagues:

Since 1996, the SEG Mining & Geothermal Committee (M&GC) has focused on
organizing a mining geophysical theme for the SEG meetings on alternate
years. After three such very successful events (we now term these "Mining
Summits"); Denver '96, New Orleans '98 and Calgary '00, planning is well
underway for "Mining Summit 2002" to be held as part of the 72nd annual SEG
meeting in Salt Lake City next October (SLC_2002).

A critical phase in the overall schedule for Salt Lake has started, with the
SEG having formally started their "CALL FOR PAPERS" (see
http://meeting.seg.org/). While the submission window is somewhat longer
than traditional, running until April 10th, it is vital for those of you who
are considering submitting a paper to get your own personal schedule in
place.

The M&GC is working to organize the major building blocks for the Mining
Summit; these are outlined below, with the Calgary 2000 events shown in
brackets.

-Short Courses (Geophysical Inversion, Airborne EM)
-Focused Technical Sessions (Case Studies, New Technology, Advances in EM,
Mine Scale Exploration)
-Special Sessions (New Developments in AEM, Janus-Status of the Industry)
-Mining Luncheon (Tom Eadie-Pasminco)
-Workshops (Ore Deposits Seminar)
-Enhanced Exhibitor Presence (organized by Geosoft)

For SLC_2002, the following are the agenda/themes that the M&GC is working
to development into a world class program:

Short Courses: MT, Visualization for Mining Geophysics, Aeromagnetics
Interpretation
Focused Technical Sessions: South American exploration (both Cordilleran &
Shield Areas), Gold (Great Basin and Cordilleran)
Case Studies: Diamonds, PGEs/Nickel, Zinc, Brownfields
New Technology: CEMI, airborne gravity gradiometry, processing, hardware
Special Sessions: Geophysics in the mining value chain; e_biz in geophysics;
success/failures & the way forward
Mining Luncheon: Eat & think at the same time & enjoy a Polygamy
Lager-unique to Utah!
Workshops: Ore Deposit Seminar II
Field Trips: Bingham, Carlin, Stillwater

The M&GC will be contacting many of you shortly to see if you can become
involved in making SLC_2002 as successful as the past three Mining Summits.

If you can help by submitting a paper, the time to act is NOW.

If you can help the M&GC in reviewing papers, your assistance will be needed
post-April 10th.

Most important for all of you is to begin thinking about attending the
Mining Summit next October; as Woody Allen is purported to have said, "90%
of success is showing up..."

On behalf of the Mining & Geothermal Committee...

Ken Witherly-Chair
Dick West-Vice Chair

Best regards for the holiday season!
