The Directors of the KEGS Foundation are very pleased to announce that Dr James
Macnae of RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, has been selected as the
inaugural Len and Genice Distinguished Visiting Lecturer in Geophysics, to be
hosted by the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Toronto in March
2019.
Dr. Macnae is globally known for his extensive contributions to advancing the
theory and practice of electromagnetic and electrical surveys, with many
important publications on these topics, and is a frequent speaker at major
geophysical meetings, including the annual KEGS Geophysical Symposium in
Toronto. He earned his MSc and PhD degrees under Dr. Gordon West at the U of
T, where he had an opportunity to meet Len Collett during the latter's long and
distinguished career with the Geological Survey of Canada.
This lectureship is made possible by the extraordinary legacy gift to the
Foundation by Len and Genice Collett, announced last year during Exploration
'17. It forms an important extension of the Foundation's efforts to foster
geophysical education in Canada, now in its nineteenth year, complementing and
extending the KEGS Special Lecture program which arranges geophysical talks by
notable experts at various Canadian universities.
It is anticipated that Dr. Macnae will present at least two lectures and a
short course in Toronto covering various topics related to modeling and
interpretation of EM, electrical and magnetotelluric surveys, with
opportunities for significant interaction with students at the U of T during
his planned stay (March 1-15). Depending on his schedule, he may also present
talks at nearby universities in southern Ontario. He is also scheduled to
present a talk at a BCGS meeting in Vancouver on March 28, before returning to
Australia.
The Directors acknowledge that the Foundation received expressions of interest
from a number of notable geophysical researchers and practitioners from around
the world for the inaugural lecturer appointment. We hope to extend invitations
to many of these applicants for participation in the Collett Distinguished
Lecture program in subsequent years.
