Dave

From my student days at UBC, I worked on the ISCU discovery (porphyry on
northern Van Island). Discovery was in 1967 and production started in 1972.

I suspect a number of deposits Doggett was discussing in his synopsis were
actually found in the period you mention but were deemed the 2nd tier ones,
while the first tier were the ones developed.

I remember when ISCU closed in 1995, a BHP engineer said that were the deposit
being assessed now (1995) it would not be economic.

Ken,
It is unfortunate that Prof. Doggett did not look back another ten years
(55years) to get the real picture of the impact of low grade, large tonnage,
open pit copper production, namely Bethlehem Copper, Brenda Mines, Newman/Bell,
Highland Valley. Prior to the recognition in the 1960s of the potential for
these type of operations in BC, copper production in Canada was focused in
Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba on underground massive sulphides.
His main point is on the delay from discovery to profitable production. Again
in the 1960/70s these timelines were shorter.
As an “old timer”, it would be interesting for Prof. Doggett to move his start
date back to 1963.
