The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) welcomes applications for a permanent, 
civil-servant position as Supervisory Geophysicist, GS-1313-14, within the 
Geomagnetism Program. 

 

Duty station: Golden, Colorado.

 

Salary: $114,454 to $148,794 per year + benefits.

Responsibilities include:

*       Act as the Operations Manager for the Geomagnetism Program and to 
manage the development, evolution, and operations of the geomagnetic 
observatory network.

*       Direct the operations of fourteen geomagnetic observatories and 
oversees collaborative efforts for data distribution and exchange with foreign 
geomagnetism centers, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

*       Provides technical, scientific, and administrative leadership for a 
staff including contractors and government personnel employed as geophysicists, 
engineers, and technicians.

*       Provide expert technical and scientific advice and consultation on 
development of real-time, state-of-the-art, time-series data acquisition, 
analysis, and reporting systems, derived real-time products, and dissemination 
of these data to U.S. and foreign cooperators and stakeholders.

*       Act as the lead USGS representative in the development of new 
agreements and MOU’s to expand the Bureau’s geomagnetic networks and scientific 
communication in the acquisition and distribution of geomagnetic data.

*       Present complex technical information to individuals (bureau and 
departmental management, contractors, etc).

The mission of the USGS Geomagnetism is to monitor the Earth’s magnetic field; 
to provide continuous records of magnetic field variations covering long time 
scales; to disseminate magnetic data to governmental, academic, and commercial 
institutions; and to conduct research into the nature of geomagnetic variations 
for purposes of scientific understanding and hazard mitigation. The Program is 
an integral participant in the National Science and Technology Council’s Space 
Weather Operations Research and Mitigation (SWORM) working group, and it is a 
leading agency within the INTERMAGNET consortium.
