Hi all,

Here in Europe, the EAGE has (for the time being) postponed its annual
conference from June to December (same venue and programme).

Kind regards
Tim

During the abstract submission process, there were options for various
recording and broadcasting rights; so those would likely just need to be
exercised or revised.

Hi All,

Considering that quite a few people in the mining community (and most likely in
other communities as well) have already decided not to participate the SExG
Annual Meeting in person, I think SExG should seriously consider some type of
hybrid format so that both in-person and virtual partipatication could happen.
This is probably a good way to minimize the negative impact of the pandemic
while allowing for more people to be engaged, thereby maxmizing the positive
impact of SExG annual meeting. Just my two cents.

Stay safe!

Lia, Rob, and Stephen, thank you for your comments and input. Anyone else,
please also share your thoughts as that can help those of us planning the SEG
meeting (technical program, workshops, field trips, lunch, etc) communicate
better to the SEG upper levels when asked.

The reviews are going ahead as normal and ends on Monday. Then we will build
the sessions before the end of May so that authors can be notified with the
accept/reject decisions and details of their presentation date/time. In normal
times, this is done so early because many speakers need to apply for visas to
travel to the US, which in turn takes more time.

Not being the US myself but helping to plan the technical program and a
workshop, I agree a Plan B is prudent.

Take care,
Sarah

Hi All,

Similar to others, the company I work for will not be sending anyone to the SEG
this year due to COVID-19 concerns/travel restrictions/etc. However we are
keen to participate in a virtual on-line format.

With other organisations that I am involved with, one has taken the Annual
Conference completely online (PGO as a series of 4, 1/2 day on-line symposia
allowing for registration of all, 1 or some combination, spread over 4
consecutive Tuesdays) and two others are seriously considering moving the 2021
events to a combination of local attendees (if local conditions allow) and/or
virtual for the out-of-town and international communities. This is a very
serious topic. I have also participated in several recent web events, one with
over 1000 attendees (kept the moderators very busy and there were several
breaks for Q&A during the 2 hr event.).

In some ways this may become the new normal.

Sincerely,

Rob

Hi Lia,

The link Ken provided indicates that the SEcG conference is shifting by a year
(missing their 100th anniversary) but preserving the technical program.
https://www.segweb.org/SEG/About/SEG/About/SEG-News.aspx#20200506

The AAPG recently postponed their annual conference, scheduled for next month
in Houston. They are considering other options (read between the lines - maybe
attempt to combine with SExG?).
https://ace.aapg.org/2020

The EGU is currently holding its annual General Assembly conference online. It
would be interesting to hear how it went.

Hi Jean, Ken,

It is good to hear your thoughts on this. I am on the SEG Near Surface
Technical Section board, and there has been some discussion of a "Plan B" in
case the SEG conference does need to be taken online.

I think it would be good to hear some opinions from members of this forum as to
if that would be better/worse that having the conference in-person and what
your suggestions or criticisms might be of taking SEG 2020 in that direction.

Hi Ken (and everyone),

My heart sank a bit when I read your post and decision not to attend SEG 2020
in Houston under the circumstances..

Speaking from the Mining Committee's perspective, we certainly respect your
views on this and your concerns for your staff.
As well, your opinion carries a lot of weight amongst us.

But there are still 5 months between now and SEG 2020 and a lot can happen in
the meantime.

So we sincerely hope that not all SEGMIN members will follow your lead and give
SEG 2020 a pass, based on the current conditions.

Because 2020 being our Mining Summit year, we are already in the process of
building a technically excellent program and have been for many weeks and
months now, and these include Oral and Poster Sessions, Field Trip, MG
Luncheon, Student Event, Committee Meeting and post-conference Workshops.

And until we are directed otherwise, as volunteers, along with the many
reviewers, we have no choice but to continue our efforts to make this a
successful event on behalf of our MG membership, regardless.

So, we certainly hope and pray that the conditions will improve such that we
can safely welcome as many of you as possible to SEG 2020 this Fall.

Hopefully so.

I remain confident that SEG will do the right thing when it comes to the safety
of its membership.

All the best and stay safe,

Jean

Dear Colleagues-

Yesterday a major geoscience event scheduled for next September at Whistler
(https://www.segweb.org/SEG/About/SEG/About/SEG-News.aspx#20200506) was
postponed to 2021 due to it seems the new BC government regulations relating to
large meetings during the current pandemic. I expect we'll hear the Round Up
and PDAC events for 2021 will be impacted as well.

The BC government appears to have taken a well thought through approach to the
pandemic that combines medical advice and social and economic considerations to
build policies which are being clearly transmitted to the public at large.

Another geoscience conference most of us are aware of, the SExG annual
conference and exhibit, is currently scheduled for a month later in Houston.
While the SExG suggests they are monitoring the situation, there is enormous
pressure to 'carry on' due to fiscal commitments which need to made years in
advance. The venue as well, is in a state that when compared with BC, is truly
the 'wild west' when it comes to managing the pandemic;
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/states-reopen-map-coronavirus.html

The governor's response is noted below; seems akin to stocking up the Alamo
before Santa Anna attacks.

The factors and conditions which the BC government have prudently considered
are simply not part of the equation in Texas (or in many other parts of the US
at either the state or federal level).

I have been and remain a strong supporter of SEGMIN and the society but I can't
in good conscience, support any of my employees to attend the conference in
Houston next October. I look forward to the SExG to make the right call and
give us the chance to build a technically excellent program in a safe venue for
us all.

Stay safe/Ken

Hi Alan,

I suggest we modify your suggestions:

Politics - Agree, leave it aside

COVID-19 - Open to discussion as it impacts SEG (after all, SEGMIN is
essentially an SEG forum), and as it impacts our profession (field work,
students, survival of service companies, travel, conferences, new norms, etc.).

Cheers! Stephen

Dear Ken,

Although I totally share your views, and I also am not planning to go to SEG
this year, tempting though it is I would rather than we all show restraint and
SEGMIN be kept free of any political or Covid commentary. We all have to make
the decisions we feel right for each of us.

For my mental health, I retreat into my science to avoid what's going on around
me, both locally and globally.

Best wishes, and stay safe,

Alan
