OK, anyone know the origin of the Garner Tullis regatta?
Answer: Garner Tullis was the SYC Commodore who donated ($5,000 I believe) to help with the purchase of the first Tulane dinghy fleet, O'Day Gannets approx. 1957. Commodore G. Shelby Friedrichs (Shelby) raised the other $5,000 and Tulane Dean of Students John H. Stibbs was instrumental in forming the Tulane Sailing Club, with the assistance of ICYRA (Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Assn.) leader Leonard M. Fowle (Boston). First Tulane dinghy regattas: Baldwin Wood, Garner Tullis & The Windjammer. What was Windjammer? (Commo. Garner Tullis' yacht) OK, but when was the first Tulane regatta? Not when SEISA was formed approx. 1956-57. Try Nov. 1941.....! This regatta was held in Nov. and Herbie O'Donnell and Gus Lorber sailed in it. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor 3 weeks later and college sailing had to wait until 56-57 to restart at Tulane (thanks to the generosity of Tullis, Friedrichs & Stibbs).
