Can I just chime in as a below-technical par user of these things. Whatever you do, can you think about the consequences for maintenance by end users (I mean MW administrators of course) with SVN. Right now in Mediawiki proper (unless I've been totally dumb and there is a better way I haven't figured out). I have to descend into the subdir for each extension and run svn up to upgrade them or check their status and so forth.
Each of the extensions points to different places in the svn tree as there isn't really all that much uniformity in where these things are placed or where the links from the extension documentation pages point to. Whatever you do at this stage with SMW, please think about ease of upgrades and updates.
