The information I have has been sent to the developer list before by Eloy. The two main performance problems are slow queries (MySQL goes into endless computation and memory consumption when SQL queries get long) and too many write operations (this may include "writing" of temporary tables that SMW and extensions like SD may create). We hope to have concrete solutions for these issues soon. For now, users with such large sites and communities should consider restricting the maximal size of queries below SMW's factory limits. Doing this is much harder once you have given your users the option of using larger queries ...
