You are, of course, right.

If a faction of developers were to decide that they wanted to make MW
entirely distributable on Packagist in the next year, they would have to
fork the code.  That might work in some projects, but the WMF will
continue to be the largest individual user of this code, so the fork
would suffer.

I like the Foundation and I think there is a lot of reason to maintain a
virtuous cycle with their use of MediaWiki core, so even though what I
said could be taken to in a more radical way, I didn't intend that.

I, like the SMW developers, simply don't have time or energy for
something so radical.  I have bills to pay and rewriting MW core isn't
going to help me pay bills.

Instead, I was hoping to encourage exactly what you said: "slowly
working on these problems..."

We run into the problem, though, that if we don't have a shared vision,
then accomplishing our goals will take much longer and is that much less
likely to happen.

Since you are going to be in Amsterdam in a few weeks, perhaps we can
talk about this then and start fleshing out some discrete actions that
we can all take.
