You _could_, with a more powerful reasoner that also supports  
transitive closures of arbitrary relations. Nevertheless, in SMW the  
overall software support (also browsing) for categories is far better  
than for relations, as categories are an important feature of  
MediaWiki and its main application Wikipedia. But things change – I  
really like the “browse” feature of SMW 0.7…
