EP says talks with Serbia only after alignment with sanctions policy Author:N1 Belgrade 2-3 minutes _____ The European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee said on Thursday that accession talks with Serbia should advance only if Belgrade aligns with European Union sanctions against Russia and makes significant progress on EU-related reforms. “Any EU funds for Serbia should be reconsidered, in order to ensure that all EU expenditures are fully in line with the EU’s own strategic goals and interests,” a press release said quoting recommendations adopted by the Commitee. It said the EU “should prioritize the alignment of accession countries with the EU’s common foreign and security policy”. The MEPs believe the EU should reward candidate countries for sustainable progress and set clear deadlines to finalize accession negotiations. “These negotiations should finish by the end of the current decade at the latest,” the press release said. European Parliament rapporteur Tonino Picula told the European Western Balkans portal that the European Union can’t tolerate the fact that Serbia is strengthening its alliance with Russia while President Vladimir Putin escalates the brutal, illegal, aggressor war against Ukraine and makes threats with nuclear weapons. The MEPs said that an enhanced enlargement policy is the European Union’s strongest geopolitical tool in light of the growing Russian threat to European peace and stability. The Committee called the EU to re-energize the enlargement process and reform its decision-making. “MEPs also call on member states to deliver on the EU’s commitments towards the Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership countries and ensure that there will be no alternatives to substitute enlargement,” it added. -- http:www.antic.org --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "SERBIAN NEWS NETWORK" group.
