Zakharova: US, EU’s goal is to drag Serbia into their anti-Russian front Jelena Babsek 2–3 minutes _____ Washington, Brussels and the Western allies are doing everything possible to drag Serbia into their anti-Russian front, because their main goal is for Belgrade to join the sanctions against Russia, said Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova. She believes that the US and European Union’s real goal is not to stabilize the region, but to break the political will of the Serbian leadership and force them to join the sanctions against Russia. The Russian state news agency TASS quoted Zakharova as saying that the emissaries of Washington, Brussels and other Western European capitals are exerting pressure on the Serbian authorities on a daily basis. “National interests are not subject to negotiation. Belgrade understands the importance of the Russian-Serbian strategic partnership which is why it is refraining from taking practical measures to the detriment of our relations,” said Zakharova. Responding to a comment that Moscow is also “pressuring Belgrade on various issues,” Zakharova said Moscow resolutely rejects such speculations. “There is no need to baselessly project the western style of arm twisting, which is foreign to us, onto our interaction with Serbia. If in some areas the Serbian partners have obligations that they do not have still fulfilled, so we think it’s a matter of time and their choice,” Zakharova said. She added that logic suggests that the opposite choice would inevitably be associated with irreparable damage to Serbia.
