Grenell reveals how “final agreement” between Serbia, Kosovo fell through

Richard Grenell, the former US special envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue
and close associate of former US president and incumbent US presidential
candidate Donald Trump, recently told an interview how Serbia and Kosovo were
on the path to reaching a “final agreement” when the special prosecutor of the
court for crimes committed by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Jack Smith,
interfered.

In an interview with Donald Trump Jr., aired on an online platform, Grenell
revealed details about special prosecutor Jack Smith and his work. Smith is
currently in the spotlight in the US for having filed two federal indictments
against Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020
election.

In Serbia, prosecutor Smith is known for his position as the chief prosecutor
at the special court for crimes of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). He gained
prominence for issuing indictments against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci
and other KLA commanders.

Grenell said that the issuing of the indictment against Thaci, whom he
described as a “great man” and said US President Joe Biden years ago called him
“the George Washington of Kosovo,” was preceded by negotiations on reaching a
“final agreement” between Kosovo and Serbia and on “getting rid of the Hague
Tribunal court.”

“We had a series of prosecutors who couldn’t find anything on Hashim Thaci, who
didn’t indict him for decades, and the previous prosecutor before Jack Smith
gave up, he said -you know there’s nothing here, I’m closing up and I’m leaving
– and the Hague continued to spend American dollars, continued spending
another couple of years, Jack Smith researching and trying to get to war
criminals,” said Grenell.

Grenell emphasized that the indictment against Thaci was issued in June 2020,
but only after he informed the Department of Justice that the then Kosovo
President Hashim Thaci and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic were coming to
the White House to meet with Donald Trump.

We were about to negotiate and sign a historic agreement between the two sides,
said Grenell and explained that he told the Department of Justice that the two
parties, Kosovo and Serbia, had agreed to get rid of the Hague Tribunal court
“that Jack Smith was running.”

He added that the individual at the Department of Justice that he spoke with
was Bruce Swartz, who told him at the time that prosecutor Jack Smith needed to
know because he was in charge of that, and asked Grenell to wait for him to
first tell Jack Smith.

“I found out two days later that he said no, Jack Smith said: You can’t do
that. Within weeks, within three or four weeks, Jack Smith had announced an
indictment of President Thaci. Before he came to the White House, President
Thaci was hauled off to The Hague and, four years later, President Thaci is
still in prison,” said Grenell.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers, a court for the crimes of the Kosovo Liberation
Army (KLA), was set up following Dick Marty’s report presented to the Council
of Europe in 2011, which detailed numerous crimes committed after the
withdrawal of Serbian security forces from Kosovo in 1999. Marty identified
several KLA commanders as the orchestrators of abductions and killings of
several hundred Serbs, Roma, and “disloyal” Albanians between 1999 and 2000, as
well as involvement in illegal organ trafficking.

MP of the opposition Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP) Marinika Tepic told a
sitting of the Serbian Parliament Security Services Control Committee that
Grenell claimed that he, Trump, Vucic and Thaci had “reached a historic
agreement that implied the abolition of the court in The Hague for KLA crimes
committed against the Serbian population.“

“Don’t you think we should know, and that Serbia should know, whether this is
true or if Mr. Grenell is now also spreading false information about Aleksandar
Vucic? Let Grenell tell us clearly whether it is true that Vucic made historic
agreements to abolish trials of the KLA for crimes against the Serbs. Invite
the President of Serbia as well – I have the recording, we can play it for him,
it’s a major interview on a public American platform. Even if he avoids coming
and giving us an answer, maybe he will at least respond to the journalists,”
Tepic said.
