24/02/2026 12:15 Serbia is the only country in the Western Balkans that did not implement two new European Union (EU) foreign policy decisions on measures against Iran. As announced by the EU, Serbia did not implement the decision on restrictive measures in view of the situation in Iran – (CFSP) 2026/265 of 29 January, which expands the list of individuals and entities to which the measures apply. Serbia did not even implement restrictive measures due to Iran's military support for Russian aggression against Ukraine and armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region – (CFSP) 2026/263 of January 29. All other Western Balkan countries, which are candidates for EU membership, have implemented the new decisions of the EU Council. Thus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania will ensure that their national policies are in line with this, and the EU takes note of this commitment and welcomes it, the statement said. Serbia is the only country in the Western Balkans that has not fully aligned with the EU's foreign and security policy, has not imposed sanctions against Russia, while maintaining high-level relations with that country and simultaneously intensifying relations with China, which often raises questions about its strategic direction. Serbia began negotiations in January 2014 and has so far opened 22 out of 35 negotiating chapters, and has provisionally closed only two.
