In High School, for a senior sceince project, I did engine oil testing as an
independent project. What I found was kinda interesting, including a new way
to evacuate half a school in under 30 minutes. I used electric hot plates to
heat the oil, and test the viscosity and I also did a friction test with two
peices of iron and a small scale to measure the resistance of the two peices
across each other with the different lubricants. (Hot and cold) I can't
remember the specs, but I do remember how well each one did. I tested
Valvoline, three store brands, Havoline, Castrol GTX, Penzoil and Quaker
State. All 10/30w. Penzoil burnt and blackened far before any other oil I
tested, did well as a cold lubricant (start-up) but horrible at a hot temp.
Valvoline was superior in both tests followed by the store brands! Havoline
was up there too, followed by Castrol GTX then Quaker State. Just thought
y'all might be interested, I dont think my tests were very accurate, but I
now use nothing but Valvoline. I wish I would of done some synthetics, but
they were not all that popular then.
