I had actually hoped to write an article on this for the SOLM, but I
think that I will say something now.

I write this not for discussion, but for brain candy...something to
think about:

How many ppl each day leave late for work and try to beat the clock by
excessively surpassing the speed limit? How many ppl run around (doing
the speed limit) with bald tires? How many ppl have a CV joint or a
tie-rod going out on their car and drive it anyways? These questions
could go on and on. Vehicle maintenance, or the lack there of, is a real
problem.

I don't know how many times each month I see someone talk about how they
have a CV joint going out or a tire that is bald and they don't simply
park the car. These things are considered "Ok" to drive with and so no
one bothers to tell these ppl that they too are endangering lives.

It would be interesting to see how many ppl are killed each year by so
called "acceptable" maintenance problems vs. street racing.

There are thousands and thousands of ppl killed each year by drunks, ppl
falling asleep at the wheel, cell phones, and road racing, but you never
hear about the accidents that happen because someone had bald tires in
the rain or snow and caused a 6 car pile-up. You never hear the stories
about how many ppl are killed because someone was out driving on bad
tie-rods that finally gave out...radiators exploding and pushing the
hood in the driver's line of sight...windows tinted to the point that
impairs sight during night time driving....black-outs over headlight and
tail light lenses.....I could go on forever.

Until everyone can say that they are not guilty of all of these things
(and the things that I have not mentioned), I think that as a community
we should not advocate street racing, promote vehicle maintenance, and
if the street racers are going to race, we should at least try to
educate them without flaming them to death.

Most ppl who see the flames would be scared off by them, and then not
get all the good out of this list. Once they are gone, we can no longer
help them.

This, by no means, is a justification for street racing. As someone has
stated, don't do this in residential areas. I have done ALL of my racing
in areas that were pedestrian free, and if I so chose to continue to do
things like this, I will continue to keep a close eye, and an alert mind
of my surroundings, make sure that my car is up for the race, and never
push myself to do something that I am uncomfortable with. Once a driver,
no matter where they are or how fast they are going, becomes distracted,
they are in danger of killing someone.

Again, I do not promote the idea of street racing. I was simply trying
to share some life experiences with ppl I consider friends. Although I
think that the flaming was not needed and the points could be made
without them, I appreciate everyone's input. One "friend" helping
another to see the faults of their ways is what makes this a community
of ppl and not just another e-mail list.

Be safe.
