Most likely this is your problem. If you have a steady hand, you can
clean it yourself no problem. Unfortunately cleaner discs don't help
much when the lens is too dirty.
Take the unit apart, locate the laser head and the lens on it. Get some
ethyl-alcohol (best is the 96%, but the more common 70% will do it too),
and some cleaner sticks. Put a small drop of alcohol on the lens with
the stick, and move the stick round the whole surface of the lens a few
times, touching it _very_ lightly, barely touching it. Then get a new
dry stick, and dry up the alcohol from the lens, again, very lightly
touching the surface. Put the thing back together, and you should be all
set. Instead of the alcohol you can use camera lens cleaner fluid, that
you can get in photo stores and the like. Both will work equally well.
Of course, do this at your own risk, but that's all the "professionals"
do.
