The law in CA is 24600.(e) Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be
plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that
taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly
visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear.
I haven't heard of any problems with people getting pulled over if they
still have the middle red reflector (since it reflects red like the law
says). But you will still get a ticket if there's a cop looking for a racer
to hand a ticket to.
