This is a series of questions that someone wrote to me about. I hope he
doesn't mind me using his questions in public, but they are good
questions for someone that is new to all of this, as I was just a few
months ago.

<<what gain will i get from installing the k&n filter if i don't install
anything else?>>

Honestly, 1 to 3 horsepower I would think is a reasonable guess.

<<( that hurt my engine performance?)>>

It will add to your engine's performance by allowing the car's intake to
"breathe" easier.

<<what other components must be installed for the k&n to be on its most
simple level of fault-free operation?>>

Nothing. The only other thing you will need is a K&N air filter cleaning
kit ($10), but you won't need that right away. I think the filter is
scheduled for it's first cleaning at 50k miles.

The technology behind the filter is that it is virtually the last filter
your car will need. It is good for 1,000,000 miles (yes, that is ONE
MILLION). Proper cleaning and maintenance of the filter allows this.

If you think about it, the average filter needs to be changed once a
year, or every 10k-15k miles. If you keep your car for the duration of
the payoff (for argument's sake, we'll say 5 years), and drive maybe 20k
miles a year (that's not an unreasonable amount of miles), then you will
be replacing your air filter twice a year for 5 years.

At about $10 for a normal Fram filter, that is $20 a year x 5 years =
$100.

Now, if you get a K&N filter, even if you buy it brand new from a K&N
dealer, you will buy 1 filter for it, it will cost around $50, and at
the end of the 5 years (at the same mileage as stated above), you will
only be 1/10th of the way into the life of the filter. You go in saving
$50, and that is not the end of it.

This is for the "drop-in" filter. It is a replacement for the stock
filter and needs no modifications to fit in the stock air-box. It is
"plug-n-play". It may sound too simple, but it really is that simple.
Your car will love you for it.
