If you know what your doing, you do not need a spring compressor.  If you
take the shock nut off while the strut assembly is still in the car, the
weight of the car  on the strut assembly will not let the nut fly off and
hurt you.  Just make sure you put a towel over the nut for the last couple
of turns just for safety measures.
