Hi Tom,
I would say it does indeed sound like your bearings have expired. The sad
news is that you need the services of a bearing press to remove and replace
your front wheel bearings. So you need to send this one to a shop so
equipped.

Jeff, have you actually checked your rotors?
The rotors on our cars tend to make a sound
similar to bad wheel bearings. They are thin to
begin with and just plain suck. The noise can
definitely fool a good mechanic. The bearings
are sealed and usually don't go bad. Not saying
that this is definitely it (not being able to see or hear
it myself), but I would double check the rotors.
If it is the rotors you can do the job yourself within
a half an hour if you have basic knowledge of brakes.
Which from your post I assume you do.
Tom

Ok guys, I need some advice. For the past couple of days I've been hearing a

loud, humming noise coming from the right front area of the car. I've
narrowed it down to MAYBE the wheel bearings. I've triple checked the
brakes
and the suspension components, they are fine, and in good operating order.
I've spent countless hours scouring the archives of the SE-R list. Most of
my symptoms are similar to what I've found in those archives. What I was
not
able to determine was
(1)the cost for the dealer to do the job
(2)If I were to do the work myself, what parts do I need
(3)It seems that the entire Hub assembly needs to be replaced, can't find
a
part#
(4)Is it really worth the time and effort to do this myself, (I live in an
apartment complex that really frowns upon working on cars, friends also
live
in apartments, no relatives nearby either.
I would appreicate any help or input on this situation. I found a list
member in the archives that seemed to have similar problems. Fortunately
for
him, it was a totally different situation which he easily solved. He tried
to help though, (Thanks Chris!).
Sorry to make such a long post but it's the only car I have, and like the
rest of you guys, my only way of getting to work. I'm at my wits end over
this, so I will anxiously await for responses. TIA!
Jeff Z.
