Terrin, you cant give a one word answer and expect him to know what your
talking about.
with the timing advanced, the spark is put in the cylinder earlier than
normal, causing the air/fuel mixture to ignite earlier. If the air/fuel
detonates too early before TDC, the detonation essentially pushes the piston
the opposite direction causing what is known as an engine knock(or ping).
This is not good for your engine. To combat pinging, you can use higher
octane fuel, because the higher octane gas detonates slower.
Don't quote me on this, but by advancing your timing, you are slightly
lowering the compression in the engine when the fuel is ignited. lowering
compression=extra hp. Maybe compression is the wrong word, but basically if
you take the same air/fuel mixture and ignite it in two different volumes of
space, the explosion in the smaller volume will exert more force.
