I think the noise you hear might be due to play in bad
wheel bearings. When you hit the brakes it causes the
shoes to shift the drums and make the noise. If all
the obvious things like checking for loose cylinder
bolts, missing shoe springs, etc. check out ok, then I
would check the wheel bearings.
