After recognizing long lengths of stay and higher mortality in several patients
with new onset afib and sepsis, we decided to look into this group a bit
further. We completeted a retrospective analysis of 274 septic patients with
afib. Conclusion: a statistically significantly higher mortality was observed
in critically ill septic patients with new-onset AF, as were longer duration of
mechanical ventilation, ICU, and hospital LOS. Whether the higher incidence of
AF in septic patients is a specific risk factor for outcome or an indication of
severity of illness remains to be determined

As I recall Christa Schorr and some of our docs published something on AFib and
sepsis. Christa?

It might be a problem as a screening criteria especially if you have a robust
cardiac population; however, new onset AF is seen among Septic patients as I
have found in our data set. I do recall reading about AF in Sepsis in a
published paper but can't recall the author. There is published data out there
on this topic.

One of our Intensivist was asking about including Atrial Fibrillation with a
RVR as one of the SIRS Symptoms. He felt this may give some false positive for
meeting two SIRS criteria for sepsis. Have you found this a problem?
