Great point Mary; In theory, the latest sepsis definitions have 'replaced' the old ones for such things as research protocols. As there has been no effort to broadly educate anyone about the utility of these new definitions, they are for the most part impractical. We sense anecdotally that using them for instance to screen for sepsis would be disastrous by delaying recognition - thus negating all the progress that we have made on early recognition (= early intervention)
They seem to be, by definition, a good way to risk stratify patients who are likely to 'go bad', but patients who meet the Sepsis 3 criteria are likely sick enough to be recognized from the doorway. As many others have said, there is NO plan by CMS to incorporate these new definitions into the core measure, nor will they be incorporated into the ICD-10 descriptions. Therefore, practically speaking, they are of no use in the day to day work of screening, treatment or compliance Thanks, MARY ANN BARNES-DALY MS-L RN CCRN DC | Clinical Performance Improvement Consultant Quality & Clinical Effectiveness Team | Office of Patient Experience Sutter Health -2200 River Plaza Drive, Sacramento, CA 95833 Mobile 916.200.5604| Office 916.286.6717 | [email protected] "You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
