CMS has stated they are not for now incorporating sepsis 3 into Sep 1 IQR measure.. See below CMS Q and A Hospital Inpatient Questions and Answers Q&A ID Number: 162942 New Sepsis/Septic Shock Recommendations from JAMA Published 03/04/2016 08:23 AM | Updated 03/04/2016 08:25 AM Specification Manual Version: | Discharge Period: Topics · Hospital Inpatient - Sepsis · Severe Sepsis Present Question: Will there be a suspension of the SEP-1 measures in consideration of the recommendations from the Society of Critical Care Medicine published in the February 2016 issue of JAMA which: Aim to Redefine Definition and Enhance Diagnosis of Sepsis, Septic Shock
A task force of leading sepsis experts is putting forth important, new recommendations for physicians. The group’s recommendations not only advance new definitions for sepsis and septic shock, but also offer clinical guidance to help physicians more quickly identify patients with or at risk of developing sepsis. Answer: CMS always welcomes new research and innovative thinking. We realize that hospitals are curious whether the newly proposed sepsis and septic shock definitions published in JAMA will replace the severe sepsis and septic shock definitions specified in the SEP-1 measure. CMS is not making any immediate changes to the current definitions as specified in the SEP-1 measure. However, CMS is reviewing the new information, and will release a more detailed response to the JAMA articles in the near future. William E. Haik, M.D., F.C.C.P., C.D.I.P. As you all know this historically this has happened every 4 years since 2000, but I have not heard anything mentioned on the list-serv and wasn't sure with the new Sepsis-3 definition just having been released earlier this year if that would still happen for 2016. Thank you in advance for anyone who may have and be willing to share their insights!
