Jeanie, If there is a 20% positive patient discharge rate, is there a mechanism in place in the ED to assure that potential sepsis patients and their families or surrogates receive instructions, pamphlets, or other signs and symptoms to watch for information? Triggers for a return visit to the ED or their doctor? I have noted more institutions are doing this in the ED but also upon discharge from inpatient wards if they are at risk for infection.

I wanted to know if anyone could share their data on what percent of patients that screened positive for sepsis actually went home and were not admitted. We are finding that about 20% of our population that screened positive for sepsis are going home. Are screening parameters are : Suspect infection "Yes" with 2 of the following: Alt LOC, Temp <96.5, Temp >100.4, HR >95, SBP <100, MAP <65, RR >22.
