Any clinical feedback is helpful,

An Attending at our hospital explained this once and it made sense. But now I
need more clinical interpretation and explanation because the it is hazy again.
I remember the conversation was whether or not this patient had "severe
sepsis". I am not looking for a recap on the measure but rather a clinical
explanation of END-ORGAN dysfunction? If a patient has Pneumonia and has a
history of COPD. The Acute Hypoxic Respiratory failure that is happening is
related to the 'Pneumonia' , and not necessarily "sepsis-related" end-organ
dysfunction? Or is it?? When I think of the word 'END' what should I be
thinking of?
