In a raidb1 setup - the one you are using - backends are expected to be identical.

You might want to try raidb0 or raidb2 setups

However, be aware that these parts of the code are not as well maintained as raidb1.


Also, I forgot to mention that the raidb0/2 setups, which are essentially load-balancing tools, offer only very limited 'unification' capabilities. In particular, cross-db joins are not supported.
