Croatia's Muscle-Flexing With Serbia Fuels Region's Tensions Drago Hedl Analysis28 Mar 16 2016-03-29 12:16:40 New right-wing government's threat to Serbia's EU integration leaves relations with Belgrade in tatters - and adds to nervousness in the region generally. BIRN In one of his first moves as Croatia's new Foreign Minister, Miro Kovac has told ministry employees to stop using the term "region" when referring to countries of former Yugoslavia. "Region is a vague notion, so in future the much more precise term 'neighbourhood' is to be used," Kovac said when he took the office in January. The term "region" will meanwhile be reserved for neighbouring EU countries, such as Austria, Hungary, Italy and Slovenia. The announcement was more than a simple linguistic distinction and has clear geographic and political implications, suggesting that the new government intends to put more emphasis on relations with EU member states than with the rest of the Balkans. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "serbia" group.
