See: Runtime.runFinalizersOnExit(). There is no guarantee that finalizers will be called, unless you use that deprecated and unreliable method.
Thanks for that, not noticed that before, or have since forgotten ;) It certainly seems like there is a bit of a gap in the spec around this area.
